A bit about the instructor
Hi, I’m Anne Galloway and I’m the instructor for this course.
I’m a social anthropologist whose research interests centre around STS studies of emerging technological practices – especially pervasive computing and locative media – as well as related material culture studies and ethnographies of design practice and culture. Most of these interests build on past research in urban space and culture, architecture, art, archaeology, history, politics and philosophy. In fact, one of the reasons I like STS studies so much is because it is so interdisciplinary.
My research has been presented to international audiences in academia, government and industry, covering such topics as technology in everyday life, design research and ethics, multi-disciplinary collaboration and critical cultural theory. Most of these presentations are available on my website, and if you like reading, my research has also been published in academic journals and industry magazines – and a few things I’ve said over the past few years have even shown up in popular newspapers.
These days, when not teaching or finishing off my dissertation, I can be found working with Timo Arnall’s Touch project on RFID and Near-Field Communication. And since it’s winter-time now, chances are that I’m hanging out somewhere warm with friends, listening to some of my favourite winter music, playing with my cat Enid Coleslaw, or reading old Love & Rockets comics.
The best way to reach me is by email at anne [dot] galloway [at] gmail [dot] com. I check it every morning and again mid-afternoon, and you can expect a response within 24 hours on weekdays, and I’ll get back to you as quickly as possible on weekends and holidays.
